Indian electronics going to change

Only Certified Electronics Products To Enter India From April

The electronics ministry has finally decided to take stern action against selling of sub-standard electronics products.

Quality standard of electronics goods in the country has always been questioned. The government has tried its best to figure out a way to ensure the standards are of the highest quality. Even then, sub-standard goods are easily available in the country. But it seems, the ministry has finally woken up to the obvious and is looking to adopt an air-tight standard mechanism, which will be able to mandate standards and certification for electronic products and services, a government official has reportedly said.

According to a PTI report, "By April 2013, an institutional mechanism to develop and mandate standards and certification for electronic products and services for strengthening quality assessment infrastructure nationwide will be in place," said Ajay Kumar, joint secretary, Department of Electronics and Information (DeitY) and Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. "In the first phase, 15 electronic products will be tested and certified by laboratories accredited by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)," Kumar added.

In the National Electronics Policy cleared by the Union Cabinet in October 2012, the Central government had announced steps to curb inflow of sub-standard and unsafe electronic products. Kumar said the process for setting up laboratories for testing and standardising electronic products and services is currently on and will be over by this April.

Recently, we had reported about government making it mandatory for around 15 electronics goods to obtain standard compliant certification before selling in the country.
